It’s mostly over now. But it kind of looked like the end of the world for a while there, the sun and sky looked like blood at certain times, the sun was practically gone for 2 days. Like California, caused by years of severe government mismanagement of their forests by our northern neighbors.

JWs view of Lord of the Rings VS Harry Potter
by serotonin_wraith ini'm sure this will vary between jw to jw, but their choices are:.
1) they won't watch/read either.. 2) they will only allow lotr, not hp.. 3) they will only allow hp, not lotr.. 4) they will allow both.. in my experience, 3 never happens and 2 happens the most.
with the similar theme of magic, the occult, fantasy and monsters, i wonder what lets them think one is okay and the other is not.

Interesting, in most congregations I was in both were big no-no but adjacent congregations were fine as long as you kept quiet about. Then again, I remember HP was called out at the convention (not by name) for being dangerous and targeting children with spiritism.
How about comedies like Life of Brian or Religulous. They are making fun of common Christian narratives and I think that most people would have problems with those than whether or not fantasy/demons/magic is allowed.

Did Russell Consider Himself a Messiah-Like Figure?
by Sea Breeze infrom this it is clearly seen that the editor and publisher of zion’s watch tower disavowed any claim to being individually, in his person, that “faithful and wise servant.” he never did claim to be such,” (“god’s kingdom of a thousand years has approached,” 1973, p. 346).. this contradicts watchtower december 1, 1919, p. 357 where the watchtower states russell did in fact claim to be the faithful and discreet slave.
“thousands of the readers of pastor russell’s writings believe that he filled the office of ‘that faithful and wise servant,’ and that his great work was giving to the household of faith meat in due season.
his modesty and humility precluded him from openly claiming this title, but he admitted as much in private conversation,” (watchtower, dec. 1, 1919, p. 357).. russell founder of the wts, called himself "god's mouthpiece" (wt 1906 july 15 p. 229) and stated that if didn't speak ... the stones would cry out.

False humility is a typical sign of narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths. Russell was credibly accused of swindling people and subsequently indicted for fraud. You can’t sell things like Miracle Wheat without selling yourself.

Does the Governing Body already know that Jehovah (the name) came from Babylon the Great?
by Chevelle ini'll start by stating the obvious... according to the watchtower, the catholic church is a huge part of babylon the great which is led by satan and his demons.
raymundus martini, a catholic monk (who "represents" babylon the great to some extent), woke up one day in the 13th century and decided to alter yhwh so it can be easily pronounced.
hence the spanish-ish version of yhwh was created... jehova... (sounds something like this in spanish: heh-o-va).

@careful: the point is not that they do, the point is the hypocrisy especially given the things we now know from historical records, both about gods name and the original Christians. If you claim to be a ‘first century Christian’ then you should do things like first century Christianity, which is a lot closer to Judaism, very likely doesn’t use God’s name and doesn’t really have the same concept about the modern Christus. The fact is that they have taken most of third century Christianity (Catholicism) when it comes to canon together with a form of 19th century Protestantism (Millerism) but simultaneously rejecting the core tenets of all in an attempt to set them apart making themselves internally contradictory and incomprehensible.

The JWs also use Babylon the Great’s biblical canon, despite knowing full well and even devoting entire articles in their rags to the church significantly editing out scriptures to fit their own dogma. If you want the scriptures from the “true” first Christians as they often claim to be extension from, they would include many, many Christian scripture written between 200BC-400AD that may be very problematic to explain literally and also torpedoes most of their own dogma.

Is 1914 still a major belief in JW land ? Or has it been abandoned ?
by smiddy3 ini just wonder about this topic as it is now 109 years since that date and what was expected to take place has never happened ..

@Beth Sarim: just believe me, God told me so, and if you don’t believe me, that means you’re not a true believer. The evidence is so clear, only 1 guy in the 1890s figured it out and then he started a whole religion around it, the fact people joined a religion without any evidence is evidence that it’s true, because if it weren’t true, he couldn’t have figured it out.
The JW religion is true, because the JW religion tells me so - a synopsis of every argument from Fisherman and his clones.

American Healthcare: How your system works
by Diogenesister incanada has universal healthcare.
the consensus is that america never will.
can anyone explain why, please?

@TonusOH: both New York and California and a few others like Massachusetts have systems like what you propose. There are 52 different states in the US, like EU states, they have a form of autonomy on these issues and each one has a different system.
And there is plenty of evidence of what works, the best rated hospital systems and outcomes are in places like Pennsylvania, Texas, Idaho or Utah, where there is minimal government involvement with healthcare, whereas New York, California and similar states consistently rate towards the bottom.
The best system is always the one the government doesn’t get involved in. Even in countries with government single payer health care systems, the overwhelming majority of people will prefer the private option when available.
The fact one side consistently refuses to offer any evidence that their system works should be a marker that it is a religious statement rather than a political or practical solution.

The Org. covering up the SHUNNING POLICY !!

"No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear." - Edmund Burke.
Sad to say many are waking up way too late in life and realizing their mistakes when there is no way back. There are many that are staying in because they have effectively been robbed from their livelihoods and the only thing keeping them alive is the goodwill of (believing and unbelieving) family members.
Like when we used to go door to door and after “proving” some point about their religion, people said I was born Catholic and I’ll die Catholic, this is that but a thousand times worse.
How hard must it be for some to have their children died without saying goodbye because they were shunning them and now the org basically says “we never actually said that”.
